World Cup 2026 · Los Angeles

Why Los Angeles Is The World Cup City

Los Angeles was no accident pick for FIFA. This city has been building its soccer identity for decades — and the World Cup is the moment it all comes together. LA has a connection to this tournament that goes back 32 years.

🏟️

SoFi Stadium

Opened in 2020, SoFi Stadium is the most expensive stadium ever built at $5.5 billion. Home to both the LA Rams and LA Chargers (NFL), the venue seats over 70,000 and is widely considered the crown jewel of American sports infrastructure. FIFA officially calls it “Los Angeles Stadium” during the tournament.

🇺🇸

USA Opens Here

The United States Men’s National Team plays their World Cup opener right here in Los Angeles on June 12 against Paraguay — then returns June 25 to face Türkiye. LA is where Team USA begins their World Cup campaign in front of their home crowd.

📅

8 Matches Including a Quarterfinal

Los Angeles hosts 5 group stage matches, 2 Round of 32 knockouts, and a Quarterfinal — one of only eight Quarterfinal host cities in the entire tournament. Only the Semifinals and Final rank above it in prestige.

LA’s World Cup History

Los Angeles last hosted the World Cup in 1994 — when the Rose Bowl hosted the famous Final between Brazil and Italy (Brazil won on penalties). The 1999 Women’s World Cup Final was also played in LA. This city knows how to host the world’s biggest soccer moments.

🌍

Three Professional Soccer Clubs

LA Galaxy, LAFC, and Angel City FC make Los Angeles one of the few US markets with three professional soccer clubs. The depth of soccer culture here — driven by generations of Latino families, European immigrants, and now a new generation of American soccer fans — makes LA one of the world’s genuine soccer cities.

🎉

FIFA Fan Festival at the Coliseum

The FIFA Fan Festival transforms the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum into a global celebration of football, culture, and community for 39 days. Community ambassadors include Snoop Dogg, Cobi Jones, Eva Longoria, Magic Johnson, and Will Ferrell. LA doesn’t just host the games — it hosts the experience.

The Venue

SoFi Stadium
LA’s World Cup Home

SoFi Stadium opened in 2020 in Inglewood and immediately became the most spectacular sports venue in the United States. Built at a cost of $5.5 billion, it features a translucent roof, a 70,000-seat capacity, and a 6,000-square-foot video board system. Home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, SoFi hosted Super Bowl LVI in 2022 and is now ready for the world stage.

During the tournament, FIFA officially designates it as “Los Angeles Stadium” — a name that will be heard by billions of viewers across 200+ countries. For Los Angeles youth soccer players, this is the field they’ll grow up pointing to as the place where history was made in their city.
